What is Girmitiyalogy?
Restoring ancestral memory and historical truth
From girmit — the vernacular for the “agreement” that bound labourers to plantation work overseas — Girmitiyalogy recovers histories that colonial narratives left out.
Introduced as a discipline by Prof. Dr. Shardhanand Harinandan Singh (August 2025), it integrates historical research, transnational studies, heritage preservation, digital archiving and community engagement to produce historical truth (Itihāsa) in contemporary global discourse.

Messages from our community
“Girmitiyalogy — a groundbreaking platform placing the history and heritage of the Girmitiya diaspora into the world's narrative. A valuable resource for educators, researchers, students, and descendants — a truly noble initiative. Proud to be part of this team that connects past and future generations.”
“The Girmitiyalogy platform is a long-awaited tribute to the resilience, journeys, and legacies of our Girmitiya ancestors. By blending history with technology, it promises to reconnect families with their roots and preserve a vital chapter of the Indian diaspora. This initiative is more than a website — it is a bridge across generations. With my blessings.”
