About Us

About Our Institution

Welcome to Girmitiyalogy.com – the academic knowledge portal dedicated to the study, education, and digitization of the history of Girmitiyas and the postcolonial records of their descendants.

What We Do

Girmitiyalogy is an interdisciplinary field focused on exploring and preserving the heritage and contemporary significance of Indian indentured laborers (1834–1920). We develop international academic programs (BA, MA, PhD, Executive PhD, and Minor studies) and advise schools on including Girmitiya-related educational materials.

Why It Matters

Millions of men, women, and children were transported under colonial conditions to the Caribbean, Suriname, Fiji, Mauritius, South Africa, and beyond. Understanding their experiences is crucial for studying migration, colonialism, hybrid identity formation, and lineage research. Preserving and digitizing these records ensures historical justice and cultural continuity.

Our Core Objectives:

  • Education: Offer unique curricula, digital lectures, and exchange programs with global partner universities.
  • Research & Support: Collaborate with archives and cultural councils to digitize genealogical and historical records, making “forgotten voices” visible.
  • Connecting & Inspiring: Foster global academic and cultural collaboration, conferences, masterclasses, and publications on hybrid identity, interculturality, anti-racism, and sustainable education.
  • Digitizing Archives: Establish partnerships to preserve migration documents, land records, biographies, religious and genealogical records, ensuring accessibility for researchers and descendants.

Message from Professor Dr Shardanad Harinandan Singh

These Persons have been directly or indirectly involved in initiating and developing the interdisciplinary study Girmitiyalogy. Without them, things would not have gone so smoothly in making this milestone happen. On behalf of my family and me, the Humble thanks them all.
